Going, Going, Gone: 10 Signs You Should Outsource Your SEO

If you’re like most business owners or in-house marketers, you’ve probably read up on digital marketing. Obviously, right? There are many basic digital marketing and SEO (search engine optimization) strategies you can enact to help your site rank on Google—and hopefully, you’ve tried some. We hope you’ve had some success. Whether you’re still feeling hopeless or want to take your SEO game to the next level, you might wonder whether it’s time to outsource your SEO.

With paid search results dominating the top of results pages, it’s important, nay, vital to rank high—and often. Did you know that ¾ of the clicks for any given search term goes directly to the top five results? You can do a lot on your own, but it’s hard to compete with those numbers.

Here are our top 10 signs that it’s time to outsource your SEO to a professional.

1 – You’re Not Ranking

If this isn’t literally your site, you could be doing better, friendo.

It’s a sad day when you can’t get your site to rank on the SERPs (search engine results pages). If you don’t know how to improve your ranking or get noticed to begin with, it’s probably time to outsource your SEO to a professional who can do an analysis and make some immediate adjustments. Hell yes to going hands off!

2 – You Aren’t Coming Up With New Ideas

Penny for your thoughts? Nickel? Dime? A QUARTER EVEN?

Is your blog full of the same recycled topics? We get that—it’s tough to write about the same thing repeatedly. We’re lucky to be in an ever-changing business, with constant developments in marketing—but some small business owners are in charge of establishments in very “unsexy” industries, which makes content generation a special challenge. If you need help coming up with new ideas that’ll help readers and pull them in, it’s time to outsource your SEO.

3 – Your Rankings Are Stagnant—Or Worse

PS: We may have a new favorite stock photo.

Maybe you have a decent grasp of SEO and you’ve been able to rank for multiple keywords. If so, awesome! High five! But eventually, you’ll probably hit a plateau—or worse, your rankings will drop due to competitor actions or new Google criteria. If that’s happened to you, guess what? It’s time to seek the advice of an SEO professional to attempt to recover your rankings ASAP.

4 – You Aren’t Diligently Tracking Rankings

Ah, yes, the 3-D non-existent rating system. But no, really, how are you ranking?

Slow down there, Sparky! Are you creating content without analysis? Intuition is a necessary component of knowing how to write the next best thing—but it should be informed by research, and balanced with it, too. You should make sure to track your rankings and the keyword research you’ve done. If you’re not doing that, you might get more bang for your buck by hiring a professional SEO expert who will.

5 – You Don’t Regularly Perform Gap Analyses and Do Content Planning

Also, probably don’t use thumbtacks on your calendar, but you get the point.

Do you regularly check for gaps in content, both on your site and in your industry? Do you apply that knowledge to your content planning after hours of keyword research? C’mon. Be honest here.

If you don’t, it might be time to ask for help. You’ll get more out of your money, time, and content creation efforts with an SEO specialist providing you with some data and direction. A quality SEO expert will include you in the decision-making process as you get set up and let you know exactly where your money is going.

6 – Your Blog Is Blase

Hopefully your blog is called more than “BLOG,” too.

Is your blog boring, even though you can come up with plenty of ideas? If it doesn’t stand out, it’s probably blase (aka “meh”)—and you’re not the only one thinking about it like that. Chances are, your customers are, too. If you need to wow them but feel pulled in a hundred other directions as a business owner or you are a marketer wearing too many hats, you should think about outsourcing your SEO.

7 – You Can Afford Help, But Not a Full-Time Employee

As if we weren’t going to use this image. Pfft.

Do you have the budget for SEO assistance, but not enough to hire someone to handle your SEO or digital marketing on a full-time basis? Lots of small business owners are in that situation. It may be a smart financial decision to outsource your SEO—that way, you get what you need and still save on the expenses of hiring an FTE (full-time employee). Your SEO expert is there for as long as you need them, whether it converts into a full-time role or remains a freelance gig.

8 – You’re Not Sure How to Optimize Your Website

If your website looks okay, but it’s not ranking, you might have some other stuff going on behind the scenes. You may need to optimize your meta copy or improve the mobile-friendliness of your site. If you’re not sure how to do those things, it’s time to contact an expert. Like many marketers or business owners, you may have a healthy picture of what “good SEO” looks like—but the nitty gritty of optimization and backstage technical details can really throw you for a loop.

9 – SEO and Digital Marketing Jargon Confuses You

Why are there so many terms?!

If you’re not sure why everyone is so obsessed with CRO (conversion rate optimization) or how to get customers to convert, you’re missing a key piece of your digital marketing. Even if you’re doing everything right when it comes to SEO, you need to know where to send your customers next. If all of this talk about marketing funnels sounds a bit confusing, it’s okay. We get it. One person simply can’t specialize in SEO while running a business and wearing all those other damned hats. Don’t worry about the jargon and just hire an SEO expert to take care of that for you.

10 – You’re Afraid of Being Bamboozled by an SEO “Expert”

As if we weren’t going to use THIS image, too.

The truth is out there: there are lots of SEO “experts” out there willing to charge you thousands per month without delivering results.

Don’t let them scam you. A reputable SEO agency will answer your questions, analyze your site, work within your budget, and set measurable goals to prove ROI (return on investment).

It made sense when you said that we should outsource our SEO if our website looks alright on the surface but still isn’t ranking well. During a meeting at my work last week, my boss mentioned that we need to generate more traffic to our website. I’m glad I read your article so I can suggest the idea of hiring an SEO service to improve on what’s going on behind the scenes.
